“This terrible phenomenon (of terrorism) has not exempted any country from the damage that it inflicts, but we have undertaken our responsibility to protect tourist resorts and protect our visitors,” Shoukry told BNS after meeting with his Lithuanian counterpart, Linas Linkevičius.

“I want to reassure (you) that Egypt is a safe country,” he added.

Egypt’s top diplomat underlined that Jihadists operate in limited parts of the country and that there is only a very small number of them in the Red Sea coast area where popular tourist resorts are located.

Almost 22,000 Lithuanian tourists visited Egypt last year and over 8,000 in the first quarter of this year.

Linkevičius said that he discussed economic cooperation with Shoukry. The total volume of trade between Lithuania and Egypt last year amounted to nearly 164 million euros, of which Lithuanian exports accounted for around 156 million euros.
