The Lithuanian committee of the World Energy Council wrote an open letter to the government, co-signed by over 50 energy professionals, scientists and politicians, urging to reconsider its decisions to scrap subsidies for combined heat and power plants in Vilnius, Kaunas and Panevėžys, which effectively means that the facilities will be closed down as of January 1, 2016.
These power generation facilities are needed as a backup supply, the letter says.
“This government, which invests so much into energy security, forgets how easy it is to disrupt electricity supply via power cables. The Crimean example is a good case in point. Once Lithuania is left with the only power plant in Elektrėnai, the operations of the entire country’s electricity system can be upset,” Rymantas Juozaitis, the chair of the Lithuanian committee of the World Energy Council, is quoted by the Kauno Diena daily.
He says that the planned new power plants in Vilnius and Kaunas will not cover the power generation capacity of the old plants.
