EU Ambassador: Russia sanctions are working

The European Union‘s sanctions on Russia have worked, EU Ambassador to Moscow Vygaudas Ušackas believes.

If it were not for the sanctions, the EU would not have reached the Minsk agreements on truce in eastern Ukraine, Ušackas, a Lithuanian diplomat, tells LRT radio.

“If there had not been financial sanctions on individuals and companies, I wonder if the Minsk agreements could have been reached. One must admit that the situation in east Ukraine is still far from perfect, but talks are on, something which had not been the case before March 14 last year, when we signed the Minsk agreements,” Ušackas said.

“This is the leverage that the EU and its partners secured and now it is important to make sure it is implemented,” he added.

The European Union is set to review its Russia sanctions in July.
