EU should lift Belarus sanctions by the end of October, Lithuanian minister says

Lukashenko was re-elected for the fifth term as president on Sunday.

Speaking after a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg, Linkevičius said that asset freezes and travel bans for some 150 Belarusian officials might be temporarily lifted for four months. The EU’s show of good will follows relatively peaceful election campaign and the release of six political prisoners.

“So far we have not seen any reports that might complicate the situation. We must wait for official reports and continue on according to the procedure. If everything goes well, we should have the decision by the end of the month,” Linkevičius told BNS on Monday evening.

He added that although Minsk had not rehabilitated the political prisoners, as the EU had demanded, it was important to “keep the Belarusian government motivated, so that there’s no return to repression, blatant violation of human rights”.

“We want our actions to motivate change, not stall or reverse it,” Linkevičius is quoted by BNS.
