Hosting an international conference on strengthening transatlantic resilience in Vilnius, Adamkus called on Europe and the United States to focus on threats posed by Russia and China, as well as challenges to transatlantic unity.
“Terrorism, financial, economic insecurity and migration – these are the three threats America and Europe is facing today. But how are we dealing with them? Together as we once resisted to the Communist ideology or individually, the way each of us know?” Adamkus asked.
The former Lithuanian president also believes the decision to send NATO forces to Afghanistan after the September 11 attacks in the United States was a right one, but he criticized NATO’s weak involvement in later antiterrorist operations where, in his opinion, NATO let “voluntary coalitions of various confederations” to take the lead, losing the role of “the emergency and first call center”.
