According to him, the task group proposes to take a broader approach towards the model of labour relations and to protect workers’ interests as well as to encourage the employers to maintain legal labour relations.

Lithuania’s peculiarities included overtime ban, a ban on fixed-duration contracts of employment, relatively high severance pays and pilot holidays, which were twice longer than those of their colleagues in Latvia, Davulis said.

“International experts, including the experts of the European Commission as well as various international organizations, are pointing finger at the regulation of labour relations, at the shortcomings of the pension reform. They say you cannot face challenges with such regulation since the labour market is too inflexible and its regulation is too stringent and not conducive to adaptation. Certain changes are necessary and those changes have to be complex and not cosmetic. It’s a good chance for Lithuania to fully reload the regulation of labour relations,” he told BNS.

The government will on Tuesday start discussing a new social model, which has been developed by a group of scientists and will replace the existing regulation of labour relations.

In line with the draft, most amendments to the Labour Code would come into effect on January 1, 2016.
