French PM to visit Lithuania in September

“The French prime minister’s visit was postponed. I therefore underlined that it was very important for us that it should take place and let’s hope that this visit by the French prime minister to Lithuania could perhaps take place in September,” he told BNS by telephone from Luxembourg.

The Embassy of France in Vilnius said earlier this month that Valls’ visit to Lithuania, planned for mid-April, had been postponed to a later date due to a labour law debate at the French parliament.

Linkevičius and France’s recently-appointed Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault discussed bilateral cooperation and an updated action plan for strategic partnership that is being worked out.

The ministers also discussed Eastern Partnership issues and the upcoming NATO summit.

“We said that there must be consistency and compromises, where possible, but when it comes to matters of principle related to our values and commitments, they must be respected,” Linkevičius said.

Bilateral relations between Lithuania and France are officially termed as “strategic partnership”. The presidents of the two countries signed an agreement on this back in 2009.
