Generations X and Y ‘equally workaholic’, study shows

Although the so-called generations X and Y are characterised by different values and behaviours, their approach to working hard is similar, a new study suggests.

Researchers who studied employees at German and Lithuanian financial institutions say they are usually workaholic, even though Lithuanians have a much better opinion about their work than Germans.

The researchers examined bank employees of two generations. Generation X consists of people born between 1965 and 1980, and generation Y are people born between the 1980s and 2000s.

It was expected that generation Y, often presumed to feel less responsibility and attachment towards their employer and the work place, would view workaholics negatively, which should be more acceptable to the generation X which is more focused on performance.

However, the research showed that people working in the financial institutions, regardless of age, welcomed the workaholic approach and tended to work more than required of them.

Employees also rated their quality of work. Lithuanians evaluated themselves much better than the Germans.
