Greek president to visit Lithuania in late July

He is scheduled to meet with Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė, Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis and Seimas Speaker Viktoras Pranckietis on Jul. 30.

“Although we are a bit distant geographically, we share similar challenges. In terms of security issues, we have common interests and understanding as we both are situated in a border region, so we’ll speak about strengthening the European Union‘s external border,” Nerijus Aleksiejūnas, chief advisor on foreign policy issues to the Lithuanian president, told BNS Lithuania.

In his words, the meetings will also touch upon the future of the European Union and NATO-related challenges.

EU countries agreed three years ago to share the burden with Greece and Italy and relocate 160,000 migrants. Based on this agreement, Lithuania has to accept over 1,000 refugees. 468 have come to Lithuania so far but the majority of them later left for richer Western European countries.
