How much tax per capita did Lithuanian municipalities collect last year?

Vilnius led the way in the level of taxes it collected per capita at an average of €800 in 2015, a far higher amount than any other Lithuanian municipality, emphasising the gap between the capital and the rest of the country.

Kaunas collected just €467 per capita, with Klaipėda in a close third at €403 according to UAB Creditform Lietuva specialists’ analysis of the State Tax Inspectorate data on income tax paid by Lithuanian businesses in 2015. The biggest proportion of taxes last year were paid by companies in the major cities.

Most of the income tax last year was paid by small and medium-sized enterprises – over €642 million. Last year all businesses paid €962.3 million income tax in total which was 10.08% more than in 2014.

Visaginas municipality collected €367 per capita followed by Šiauliai at €291 and Panevėžys in sixth place with €289 per capita.

“This tax is the financial foundation of Lithuanian municipalities. After all, 100% of the income tax paid by companies registered in the municipality fall into the municipality‘s budget and gets used for the local population. The only exceptions are Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda, which can keep only a part of the collected income tax. The income tax figures also clearly show the average salaries in municipalities,” said the head of UAB Creditreform Lithuania Saulius Žilinskas.
