“I am being forced out, although I told the prime minister today that I would not be an obstruction. I will do it [resign] once I am told when to do it,” Skvernelis said during a press conference.
Skvernelis, who has been running the Ministry of the Interior since autumn 2014, was nominated to the post as a non-partisan candidate by the Order and Justice party. Last week, however, after he announced he would be running for parliament in October’s elections with the Peasant and Greens Union, Order and Justice leader Rolandas Paksas said he should step down.
While Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius was initially reluctant to dismiss Skvernelis, who is one of the most popular cabinet members, he said after meeting with Paksas on Tuesday that the interior minister would have to go.
