Ireland’s president to visit Lithuania

“The visit comes in a year that Lithuania celebrates the centennial of its restored independence and will highlight the friendship and strong ties that exist between the two nations,” the Lithuanian president’s office said in a press release on Monday.

Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė is to meet with her Irish counterpart on Tuesday to discuss bilateral relations, EU and Brexit-related issues and European security.

Special focus will be given to strengthening bilateral relations in economic, business and education areas.

“According to the president, Ireland – often described as the Celtic Tiger – is a model of successful business, advanced economic development and responsible governance,” Grybauskaitė‘s office said.

“The national agreement on economic and tax policies reached by all political parties almost 30 years ago and the successful reforms that followed have made Ireland one of the most developed European countries,” it said.

“Ireland also serves as an example of successful integration of immigrants into society, keeping close contacts with its own emigrants and returning them back to their Irish homeland”.

There is a huge potential for bilateral cooperation in modern technologies, Fintech and life sciences, according to the press release.

On Wednesday, Ireland’s president is to visit Lithuania’s second-biggest city of Kaunas to be conferred with an honorary doctorate at Vytautas Magnus University.
