“The President of the Republic of Lithuania has a special status and due to his/her position, additional personal protection guarantees should be applied during the criminal process,” reads the draft government conclusion drawn up by the Ministry of Justice.

The Seimas of Lithuania has already given initial backing to Labour Party MP Artūras Paulauskas’ proposal to strike from the law the provision saying that the President may only be questioned for a pre-trial investigation if she is willing.

Paulauskas initiated the amendment in response to media reports that President Dalia Grybauskaitė refused to be questioned in an ongoing pre-trial investigation into the leak of confidential state information.
