Klaipėda port resumes normal operations after storm

Two DFDS ferries on Sunday departed for Germany and Sweden and ships queuing to enter the port are being gradually let in.

“Navigation was fully resumed on Sunday evening. Up to 11 vessels waited to enter the port due to the hurricane-strong winds. They are now being guided into the harbor and their number is constantly changing,” Dovilė Ringis, a public relations assistant to the head of the port, told BNS.

“Two DFDS ferries, whose departure had been delayed on Saturday by the weather conditions, left for Germany and Sweden on Sunday evening,” she said.

The ferry to Kiel departed at 5:30 PM and the ferry to Karlshamn left at 9 PM.

Extra precautions taken to ensure the safety of the Independence, the Klaipėda liquefied natural gas terminal’s floating gas storage and regasification unit, were removed after the gale subsided on Sunday, Ringis said.

The storm reached its highest intensity in Klaipėda at around 5 AM on Sunday, with winds of up to 34.8 meters per second and the height of waves at sea at 6-7 meters.
