The parliamentary group of the Labour Party, which is a member of Lithuania’s ruling coalition, is meeting Interior Minister Tomas Žilinskas on Tuesday to discuss refugee resettlement.
The Labour Party insists that Lithuania should go back on its commitment to accept about a thousand refugees under the European Union‘s resettlement programme. Refugees from Syria, Labour MPs argue, presents a threat to security.
So far, about 80 refugees arrived in Lithuania under the programme under which the country is to welcome 1,105 people from the Middle East over two years.
Lithuania has not experienced any terrorist attacks and the country’s security agencies said in the wake of recent attacks in Europe that there were no grounds to raise terrorism alert levels.
