Language commission urging Vilnius municipality to take down non-Lithuanian street signs

The Vilnius city municipality State Language Affairs Public Commission is opposing to Mayor Remigijus Šimašius‘ initiative to set up supplementary street signs in select streets in languages other than Lithuanian.

The Language Affairs Public Commission along with the Lithuanian National have called for cabinet representatives for the region to defend public interest, claiming that the non-Lithuanian language signs cannot be interpreted as decorative or remembrance signs. There has also been outcry due to the decision having been made without input from the city council, municipality council committees, public commissions or Vilnius’ communities.

The two organisations feel that Lithuanian is becoming devalued and pushed out of the public domain in Vilnius with a large number of non-Lithuanian signs appearing above businesses or during public events. According to them the Lithuanian capital is ceasing to reflect Lithuanian national culture.
