Large-scale war games wrap up in Lithuania

Lithuania, along with the other two Baltic countries and Poland, hosted the US-led multinational exercise Sabre Strike and held its largest-ever national military drill, Thunder Strike 2018. Baltops, a multinational maritime exercise, took place in the Baltic Sea at the same time.

Some of the training took place in civilian areas and there was an increased presence of military vehicles on the roads.

Several road accidents occurred during the drills.

Thirteen American soldiers were injured last week when four US Stryker armored vehicles smashed into each other on a road in the district of Prienai, in southern Lithuania.

In another accident last week, an US armored vehicle drove off the road and crashed into a tree in Kazlų Ruda, in southwestern part of the country, injuring three American soldiers.

Two French soldiers were injured when their ATV overturned in the eastern district of Švenčionys last Sunday.

Lithuania also hosted Flaming Sword 2018, and international special operations forces exercise, between May 21 and June 7.

The military say that up to 13,000 troops took part in the war games in Lithuania in June.
