Liberal Movement announces its electoral programme

The Liberal Movement of Lithuania has presented the party’s electoral programme. It is mainly focused around values, their consistency and the freedom of choice in all spheres. During the presentation of the programme, the Liberals also touched upon the currently highly controversial topic of the new labour code and the President Dalia Grybauskaitė vetoing it, Alfa.lt informs.

The economic and social policy guidelines were paired with a vision of zero corruption. The main goals were set to be based on three values: human well-being, free business and free individuals. Among specific proposals the Liberals highlighted the legalisation of using non-Lithuanian words and symbols to write last names in documents as well as the eventual abolishment of foster homes and the legalisation of double citizenship.

The Liberals also present a vision of minimised state budget with reduced funding for dependants and depoliticizing of state owned companies. The former is expected to increase economic participation while the latter should increase transparency and improve effectiveness through private sector involvement.

The electoral programme also touches upon flexible labour regulations and the ongoing labour code debate. “I am convinced that the Liberals will vote to reject the President’s veto. If it is accepted, the 2002 labour code would remain in place and it is a factor that has led to people fleeing Lithuania. We believe that on rejecting the veto, the law signed in June this year will come into force,” stated the party Chairman’s first deputy Eugenijus Gentvilas.

The programme is built on an expectation that minimal wages will rocket from €558 to €1000 which would be achieved through tax reductions.
