Lithuania and Moldova discuss cooperation in justice

Deputy Minister Cerbu thanked Lithuania for its long-term cooperation and expert assistance to promote justice sector reform in Moldova and facilitating legislative drafting.

Kriščiūnas stressed Lithuania’s readiness to continue to cooperate and to provide assistance to Moldova in preparation for the implementation of the EU-Moldova Association Agreement and related reforms. The Lithuanian Foreign Deputy Minister also stressed that Lithuanian authorities would continue to share their law reform experience.

The meeting discussed results of the 4th Lithuania-Moldova justice bilateral cooperation forum that took place on 22-25 August in Molėtai and perspectives for further collaboration. The participants of the meeting reviewed the forum’s successful activities, which contributed significantly not only to Moldovan justice sector reform, but also to bilateral relations between Lithuania and Moldova. The participants of the forum established contacts, which helped to create a foundation for fruitful cooperation between the Molėtai district municipality and the municipality of the Ungheni district in Moldova, the faculties of law at Vilnius University and the Moldova State University.

From 2006 to 2013, Lithuania financed 81 bilateral projects under the Development Cooperation and Democracy Promotion Programme. The projects aimed at European integration, legislative drafting and legal reforms, norms and standards for food safety, improving the capacities of local self-governments and strengthening their role in local and regional development. In 2014, Lithuania strengthens administrative and institutional capacities of Moldova, especially in the fields of justice sector reform, agriculture, bailiff services and customs, supports Moldovan women in self-governments.
