Lithuania begins municipal elections campaign

DELFI / Kiril Čachovskij

For the first time Lithuanians are going to elect mayors in a direct vote. Participants of the political campaign will be registered through 1 October – 6 December, until 85 days are left to the election.

The VRK established a number of councillors that are to be elected to municipal councils, as well as the lowest and highest number of candidates a party or public election committee may put forward, and the lowest number of public election committee members. The VRK also determined the number of signatures needed to be collected in a municipality in order to nominate candidates for a councillor’s or mayor’s positions.

In the 2015 municipal elections, a total of 1,524 councillors will be elected. The most, as in the past, will be elected to Vilnius municipality – 51, the least in Birštonas and Neringa municipalities – 15 each. Compared with 2011 elections, the number of councillors will change in four municipalities. As the population decreased in Jonava and Šilutė districts (lower than 50,000), and in Birštonas (lower than 5,000), each of these municipalities will elect two council members fewer. Meanwhile the number of Vilnius District Council members will grow by four.
