“Lithuania and like-minded countries at the UN Security Council have blocked yet another attempt by the delegation of the Russian Federation to “push through” the Security Council a statement falsely accusing Ukraine of having violated the UN Security Council Resolution 2166 and consciously suppressing information on the responsibility of armed pro-Russian separatists for the breach of the local truce and undermining of activities of international experts at the crash scene of the Malaysian passenger plane,” the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told BNS.
According to Lithuanian diplomats, the Ukrainian UN delegation later issued a statement denying the disinformation Russia attempted to spread.
“Lithuania and other EU and NATO partners are further calling on the Russian Federation to halt immediately political, military and financial support to armed separatists in Ukraine’s eastern regions,” the Lithuanian ministry said.
Russian Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin said Lithuania, the United States and Australia had blocked a Russian draft statement on ceasefire after they started offering unacceptable amendments to the offer text, according to ITAR-TASS news agency.
Lithuania is a UN Security Council member in 2014-2015.
