If approved by the Government and concerned ministries, the embassy would be opened on 5 November.
Lithuania closed its embassies in Bulgaria, Portugal and Slovenia in July. Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius said that they should be replaced by new representations in South Africa, Brazil and Australia. The move was welcomed by Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius.
This would be Lithuania’s second embassy in Africa. One already operates in Cairo, Egypt.
