Lithuania has highest share women teachers in EU

More than 97 percent of primary school teachers in Lithuania are woman, the highest proportion in the EU, according to 2014 data on the gender and age structure of the teaching staff in the EU published by the EU’s statistical office on the eve of the World Teachers’ Day.

Similar proportions of female teachers were recorded in Hungary, Slovenia and Italy.

Lithuania shares the first position with Latvia in the proportion of women teachers in secondary schools, at 82 percent.

Over 46 percent of secondary school teachers in Lithuania are 50 or more years old, above the EU’s average of 38 percent. Higher proportions were only recorded in Italy, Estonia, Latvia and Germany.

The total number of teachers in Lithuania stood at 8,400 in 2014.
