Gruto Parkas, a theme park in Druskininkai in southern Lithuania, was created in 1998 to preserve the remnants of Soviet symbolism and propaganda that remained after Lithuania claimed its independence. Visitors to the park can wander its 20ha territory to see various statues and busts of Lenin and various other Soviet political leaders and icons. The park’s cafe serves Soviet-era dishes, and there’s also an indoor exhibit with paintings and books.
Išgyvenimo Drama (Survival Drama) is a theme park and Soviet reenactment museum located in a former Soviet bunker and prison near Vilnius. Instead of fun rides, visitors are subjected to several hours of life in the Soviet Union as they change into Soviet coats, don gas masks, eat Soviet meals, undergo medical exams, and even face interrogations from real former members of the Soviet army. For those who don’t like the idea of facing prison guards with German shepherds, the theme park also offers a “relaxed” version with less-intense activities – but they’ll still only offer Soviet-era snacks!
