“It’s an acknowledgement of Lithuania’s consistent efforts, which will open up more possibilities to protect the interests of our country,” President Dalia Grybauskaitė said after receiving a phone call from OECD Secretary General Angel Gurria.

“Membership in the OECD will make Lithuania more attractive to foreign investors. It will enable us to step up cooperation with the most advanced countries and will contribute to the growth of our country and promotion of economic welfare,” she said in a press release.

In late February, the government established a coordinating committee for Lithuania’s OECD membership. Alminas Mačiulis, government chancellor and the committee’s chairman, then said that Lithuania’s membership in the OECD was important in the light of Russia’s recent actions.

Lithuania has been seeking membership in the organization since 2002.
