Lithuania launching smart metering for electricity

Lithuania is launching a pilot project of smart electricity metering to see if more accurate tracking of power use can help create energy savings.

Some people will be able to take advantage the system from the middle of the summer. The new technology will allow users to track their electricity usage in real time with a view to helping them save money.

Electricity users involved in the project will no longer have to write down the data from the smart meters, which will replace the old ones. The data will automatically be transferred to the power supplier, which will then send a bill.

The system will also allow consumers to pin down the most power consuming devices and choose the most favourable tariff plan on the basis of recommendations.

This programme is a response to the European Commission‘s recommendations for smart metering.

The pilot project will last one year after which Lithuania will decide whether to install the technology across the country.
