Lithuania may run short of funds needed to decommission its defunct Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant.
The plant’s director Darius Janulevičius says that decommissioning works might require additional €1.2 billion, but the European Union refuses to help cover it.
“Shutting down the plant will cost some €3 billion it total. I am worried that the European Commission and the European Union have made no guarantees for the remaining funds, about €1.2 billion,” Janulevičius has told LRT radio.
He says the EC believes that it has contributed sufficiently to the decommissioning and is not planning to extend the funding after 2020.
This could halt the decommissioning works, Janulevičius says.
The European Commission set aside €650 million for the Ignalina Plant in its 2014-2020 financial perspective.
Decommissioning of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant started in 2004 and is expected to be finished in 2038.
