Bernotas has served in the position from November 2015, residing in Vilnius.
After graduating from Vilnius University with a degree in organic chemistry, Bernotas collaborated with the Vilnius University’s Faculty of Chemistry before joining the Foreign Ministry in 1991. In 1992-1993 and 1998-1999, he was a foreign vice-minister, later served at the Lithuanian Embassy to Italy and was the ministry’s undersecretary in 1997-1998. In 1999-2003, he was Lithuania’s permanent envoy to the Council of Europe, was the ambassador to China in 2006-2010 and the ambassador to Kazakhstan in 2010-2014. From 2014, Bernotas was the ambassador-at-large.
In Lithuania, ambassadors are appointed and dismissed by the president upon the submission of the government and approval of the Seimas Committee on Foreign Affairs.
