The gap-filler radars will be installed in the districts of Varėna, Švenčionys, Vilnius, Jurbarkas and Pagėgiai, it said in a press release.
The new radars are planned to be integrated into Lithuania’s airspace surveillance system and put into operation by the end of 2019.
According to the ministry, two of the five radars will be used to reduce the negative impact of wind farms in the district of Šilutė and Tauragė on the ability of Lithuanian military airspace surveillance radars to detect and track air targets.
Lithuanian businesses developing wind farms in the western part of the country have provided funds for the acquisition of the two radars.
