Lithuania to vote against Russia-proposed UN resolution

“We will vote against the resolution,” Linkevičius told journalists on Friday.

The resolution will be presented at the session of the UN General Assembly next Friday. A similar resolution last year suggested expressing concern about efforts to list those who fought against the anti-Hitler coalition and collaborated with the Nazi movement among participants of national liberation movements.

In Linkevičius’ words, Lithuania always strongly condemns Nazism but will not agree to downgrade Lithuanian guerrillas who fought against the invaders after the war, since many of them had no links to the Nazis.

The minister has emphasized that Russia itself is currently engaged in aggression against a neighbouring country and cooperates with radical forces of Europe including the neo-Nazis and xenophobes who were invited to observe the elections in Crimea and Donetsk that were not recognized by the Western community.

“Under the disguise of fight against Nazism, [Russia] is trying to implement its political agenda,” said Linkevičius.
