Lithuanian Army sends helicopter to Latvia to help put out forest fire

“Latvia contacted the Lithuanian Army at around 5 p.m., asking for a helicopter,” Tomas Pakalniškis, spokesman for the Lithuanian Armed Forces’ Joint Staff, told BNS on Wednesday evening.

“It (the helicopter) has already left for Latvia,” he added.

Firefighters, assisted by a Latvian military helicopter, a local business and the State Forest Service, battled the fire, which spread over an area of more than 100 hectares in Valdgale County in the western region of Talsi.

Smoke from the fire forced the evacuation of the nearby Stikli village.
