Lithuania‘s State Border Guard Service (VSAT) officials will hold a tactical exercise in Švenčionių region near the border with Belarus to prepare for an expected increase in illegal immigrants trying to cross into Lithuania.
After the closure of the so-called Balkan corridor, Lithuanian authorities believe that illegal immigrants will begin to look for alternative routes into the EU and will increasingly take a route through Turkey to Ukraine from there to Belarus – targeting entry through Lithuania to Western Europe and Scandinavia.
During the exercise the VSAT Ignalina border guards‘ team will simulate the detention of a large group of illegal immigrants at the border of the state.
Most violations of the state border should be recorded at the border section with Belarus.
The active phase of the exercise will be held on today (Tuesday) in Čepukėnų village in the Švenčionių district. The exercise will also test efficiency of VSAT‘s interaction with other responsible authorities – the police, the Public Security Office, municipal representatives.
