Lithuanian central bank set to issue world’s 1st digital collector coin

“This would be the perfect way to mark the centenary of the restoration of Lithuania’s statehood, which we are celebrating this year, as well as show the world that we are a progressive and innovation-fostering country, always open to new ideas,” Marius Jurgilas, a member of the central bank’s board, said in a press release on Tuesday.

“Introducing a digital collector coin, Lithuania would be the first to break new ground in numismatics,” he added.

The Bank of Lithuania said it would invite technology companies and IT professionals from around the globe to take part in a hackathon to help choose the underlying technology and specific development solutions.

It will then make final decisions on the mintage, denomination, price and date of issue of the coin and on how it will be distributed.
