The Lithuanian government is giving out €18 million to dairy farmers who say low prices have dealt a lethal blow to small farms.
About 1,500 farmers will distribute the subsidy, about €80 per cow. Members of cooperatives can claim bigger subsidies.
Agriculture Minister Virginija Baltraitienė says that, in the past, milk processors would lower prices each time farmers would get government subsidies, but she hopes they will keep their word not to do it now.
Lithuania had asked for money to support its dairy farmers from the European Commission, but was turned down.
The country’s dairy farmers have suffered from global ebb in milk prices and the Russian embargo on dairy imports from the European Union.
