During the meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday, the ministers discussed the situation in Ukraine, presented the implementation of the decisions taken by the European Council and the use of EU combat groups, EU operations and other key security and defence issues of the community, the Ministry of National Defence said.
Speaking about the situation in Ukraine, Olekas noted the need to step up EU sanctions on Russia, adding that the decision on a civilian mission in Ukraine is a good but small step of the EU common security and defence policy.
“European Union countries should provide all types of assistance to Ukraine, including military equipment. Lithuania has already sent humanitarian aid to Ukraine and plans to boost the aid in the future. It is important to ensure compatibility of European Union and NATO actions,” the Lithuanian minister said at the meeting.
Once every six months, the presidency of the European Council hosts an informal meeting of EU defence ministers to discuss EU operations other key issues of the common security and defence policy.
