Lithuanian defence minister to attend Bastille Day ceremony in Paris

The minister will attend the traditional Bastille Day Military Parade, which will this year be dedicated to mark 100 years since the start of World War I. Olekas will also participate in a solemn reception hosted by the French defence minister and other events.

During the stay in Paris, the Lithuanian official will award a specialist of International Relations Department for Cooperation with the Nordic and Baltic States of the French Joint Defence Staff, Lieutenant Commander Benoit Bernard, with the Lithuanian defence system’s Medal for Merit. The French officer will be awarded for his merits and personal contribution to the organization of the participation of the Lithuanian Air Force aircraft in the international operation Sangaris in the Central African Republic.

Three soldiers of the Lithuanian Guard of Honour will also be among the participants of the Bastille Day festivities, carrying the Lithuanian national flag during the parade.

The Bastille Day marks the beginning of the French Revolution with the Storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, which eventually led to the collapse of monarchy.
