“Economic interests come first. Promotion of competitiveness and export, development of energy security and transport – these are the areas which our economy rests upon. We must help business and the country,” said Linkevičius.
Another important task was to increase the number of Lithuanians in the European Union and other international organisations.
“Let us use the experience of those who worked during the Presidency of the EU and in other international institutions. Lithuanians working here and those scattered across the world or former diplomats can also assist the country,” said Linkevičius.
The head of diplomacy also highlighted the importance of communication and public diplomacy. Linkevičius invited to communicate more actively with Lithuanian and foreign societies, and utilise social media which is crucial now, in the face of active propaganda attacks.
According to the minister, last year was the time for consolidation in international institutions. Successful presidency over the EU Council, membership in the United Nations Security Council and strong foundations preparing for membership in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development were noted.
