The measures include increasing penalties for drinking alcohol in public places and prevention programmes targeting children and youth.

The government has also agreed to step up control of alcohol sales and develop special rehabilitation programmes for drunk drivers and perpetrators of other alcohol-induced offences.

As of November this year, all alcoholic beverages will have to bear warnings about alcohol’s harm to pregnant women.

Minister of Healthcare Juras Požela says he will suggest legislation making alcohol licensing rules stricter.

“Right now, we have over 19,000 active licences to sell alcohol. I think we should review them more often, because now the licences are issued indefinitely,” Požela said on Monday.
