Lithuanian language under threat of decline, say experts

On Sunday, February 21 countries around the world marked International Mother Language Day and Arūnas Dambrauskas, the deputy director at the State Language Inspectorate, said the current state of the Lithuanian language was not the best not only because of the influence of foreign languages, but also Lithuanians‘ attitude towards their own language.

The head of the State Language Inspectorate Donatas Smalinskas said that the focus on language in Lithuania has deteriorated.

Smalinskas said that this was shown by the declining students’ literacy levels in Lithuania but also by the fact that the native language is being pushed out of scientific fields.
