The shipment contains 4.5 tons of dry meals and medical instruments provided by the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence and about 580kg of donations collected by an NGO, Aspectus Memoria, the Defence Ministry said.
The C-27J Spartan flight has been registered as delivery of humanitarian aid, therefore, only the most necessary items collected by the public organization – food products, medication, sleeping bags, etc. – were accepted aboard.
The Defence Ministry says it is meeting its commitments to deliver the items collected by Aspectus Memoria under terms and conditions agreed to in advance. The next delivery of support to Ukraine is subject to a future agreement.
Vytautas Budreika, the coordinator of the group that helped collect the donations from the public, told BNS on Tuesday that public organizations collected about 7 tons of aid for Ukraine. The remaining 6 tons will be delivered by trucks.
“The support donated by people will definitely reach Ukraine, just a little later. Probably next week,” said Budreika.
In his words, carrying a humanitarian dispatch by trucks will be simpler and cheaper than by plane.
The time of departure from Lithuania is yet to be established.
In addition to food products, clothing and sleeping bags, public organizations have collected helmets and bullet-proof vests.
