“Iran could become Lithuania’s gate to the Middle East. This country has deepwater seaports, also good roads, neighbours like Azerbaijan, Armenia, Tajikistan, Pakistan and other countries,” the social democratic MP was quoted as saying in a statement.

According to Sysas, five Lithuanian lawmakers went to Iran with a political mission and “now visits of specific ministers and specialists need to be planned”.

Western countries are now considering softening international sanctions against Iran, which has been accused of trying to build nuclear weapons.
