In a secret ballot, 48 parliamentarians voted in support of appointing lawyer Diana Gumbrevičiūtė-Kuzminskienė for the post, 42 were against and 18 abstained.
Liberal MP Dalia Kuodytė dismissed the vote as disgraceful, saying that the vote reflects the homophobic atmosphere at the Lithuanian parliament.
Last December, parliament rejected another proposed candidate, Lyra Jakulevičienė, for equal opportunities ombudswoman.
In her recent presentation at the parliament, Gumbrevičiūtė-Kuzminskienė said she supported same-sex partnerships.
