Lithuanian PM meets Chinese premier – pushes for more trade

The Boao Forum for Asia, hosted by the city in China’s south, fashions itself after the World Economic Forum in Davos and is attended by leaders of Asian nations as well as heads of major companies. Lithuania’s Prime Minister Butkevičius was the only European government head at this year’s forum.

China’s economic prospects took centre stage at the forum where Premier Li Keqiang delivered the keynote address. “Fluctuations are unavoidable and we will not violate economic rules or market operations due to small fluctuations,” he said, responding to global concerns about China’s response to the slowest growth over the last quarter-century.

In his address, Lithuania’s Premier Butkevičius outlined prospects for cooperation between the Baltic state and China.

“China and Lithuania can effectively cooperate in the areas of information technology, transport, economy and culture. By encouraging such initiatives, we hope for a free trade and investment treaty between the European Union and China,” Butkevičius said.

During a lunch with Li Keqiang, Butkevičius presented Lithuania’s ambitions to export dairy products to China.
