Lithuanian PM sceptical about Russia’s sincerity in Syria

Speaking on the radio Žinių Radijas on Thursday, Butkevičius said that Russia’s airstrikes against targets in Syria on Wednesday contradicted Moscow’s previous calls to form an international coalition against the terrorist group.

The Lithuanian prime minister has also noted that preliminary reports suggest Russia’s target was not ISIS.

Western officials suspect that Russia’s airstrikes on Wednesday against targets in Syria were aimed at boosting the position of President Bashar al-Assad‘s regime which Western leaders say is guilty of serious war crimes against its own population.

“Media reports so far cast doubt about the sincerity of Russia’s declared intention,” Butkevičius said. “We will continue to support the position of the international coalition about settling the conflict. The coalition against ISIS includes all NATO countries, Lithuania as well.”
