Lithuanian, Polish PMs emphasize importance of joint energy projects

After the Vilnius meeting with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, the head of Lithuania’s government, Saulius Skvernelis, said the memorandum would step up the cooperation between the two neighboring states.

“The agreements signed today should give an additional impetus to cooperation between the two states. (…) I cannot skip the beautiful energy cooperation. We are grateful for the synchronization of the Baltic states via Poland. We appreciate the Polish position not to buy electricity from the unsafe Astravyets (nuclear) power plant,” Skvernelis said at a joint news conference.

Morawiecki, in his turn, said that Lithuania was an important partner of Poland, which sees the mutual strategic projects as very important.

“Our cooperation in many fields, such as energy, business, research and culture, is proceeding in a consistent manner. (…) The electricity project is important to us. We also attach importance to the gas pipeline projects,” said the Polish PM.

In addition to the project for synchronizing the Baltic power grids with the western European system and implementation of the Gas Interconnector Poland-Lithuania (GIPL) infrastructure project, the Friday’s bilateral meeting also addressed European infrastructure projects Via Baltica and Rail Baltica.
