Lithuanian population shrank 1.1% last year

On January 1, 2016, the population of Lithuania stood at 2.89 million. Net migration (difference between emigrants and immigrants) last year was about 22,900, accounting for 70% of the population loss.

Some 46,500 people declared they were leaving Lithuania in 2015. The number of people arriving to live in Lithuania was 23,600, almost 84% of them repatriating Lithuanian nationals.

Compared to 2014, slightly more people left the country last year and fewer arrived.

There were 16 emigrants per population of 1,000 (12.5 in 2014).

Natural growth was also negative last year. The number of deaths exceeded births by about 9,800.
