The conference in Paris will last until December 10. By that time, world leaders are expected to agree on climate change policy commitments after 2020 in order to curb global warming.
President Grybauskaitė says that while Lithuania has not felt strong effects of rising temperatures, climate change has already caused cataclysms in the world, including migration of people forced to leave their homes.
“It is a big problem that famine, drought, aggressive natural phenomena caused by climate change are forcing people to move. And we can see the massive movements that has directly affected Europe. Waves of people migrating are caused not just by wars, but also by climate change, droughts,” President Grybauskaitė said in an interview for the LRT on Monday.
Lithuanian officials say that the country expects to spend EUR 4.6bn on climate change policies, including renewable energy and energy efficiency, between 2014 and 2020.
