Grybauskaitė, who is delivering her annual address to the Lithuanian parliament on Thursday, believes that social security is a national priority. The president has initiated a long-term social security campaign For Safe Lithuania, which brings together people, institutions, non-government organizations and businesses to address some of the pressing issues, like child adoption, fighting violence and bullying, addictions and suicides.
In an effort to strengthen the country’s defence capacities, Lithuania has approved a mixed army model, including recruits to enhance the reserve, the President’s Office said. According to the press release, military conscription which was reintroduced last year helped man army units. Raising defence spending and modernization of military equipment were also notable achievements, the president believes.
Grybauskaitė give an overview of the country’s situation, domestic and foreign policies in her annual state of the nation address on Thursday. This will be her 7th consecutive annual address, the 2nd one during her 2nd term in office.
Over the last year, Grybauskaitė has submitted 17 bills, vetoed three laws, appointed 44 new judges and promoted 15 judges to courts of higher instance. Some 19 judges were sacked, including one for behaviour unbecoming to the profession.
Grybauskaitė has also received 32 leaders and officials of foreign states and international organizations. Grybauskaitė attended a total of 77 meetings with foreign officials, including 33 presidents, 23 prime ministers and four parliamentary speakers, 16 heads of international organizations and institutions. According to the press release, the president made 26 foreign visits.
