“Elections are an opportunity for us to make our choice. Let us not allow anyone else to do it for us. We must go to elections and vote and then demand that (members of the Seimas) not be corrupt and not steal and that they work for the people, not for themselves,” she told reporters in Vilnius on Wednesday.

The president did not state her position on corruption allegations against Liberal and Labour politicians, saying that the pre-trial investigation is still ongoing, but welcomed efforts to “to clean ourselves of corruption”.

She also underlined that several political parties were involved in the investigation.

“We can see in the media that not only this party (Liberal Movement) is having problems. I wouldn’t link this to a single party,” she said.

Law-enforcement bodies suspect that MG Baltic Vice-President Raimondas Kurlianskis gave a bribe of €106,000 to Eligijus Masiulis, who was then a member of the Seimas and leader of the opposition Liberal Movement, and sought to influence members of the ruling Labor Party via its first vice-chairman, Vytautas Gapšys.
