Vilnius University Gender Studies Centre director Professor Dalia Leinartė has been elected as a member of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women for the second time at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The Lithuanian candidate received the most support – representatives of 121 states voted for her. In total 25 candidates competed for 11 seats.
This success is seen as more recognition of Lithuania‘s active position in defending the rights of women, combating violence against women and gender inequality.
Lithuania actively contributes to the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution No. 1325 which aims to give women a greater role in peace and security, conflict resolution and prevention diplomacy, human rights fields. Lithuania has also funded development cooperation projects on womens’ rights issues in Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova.
Leinartė served as Vice-Chairman of the Committee during her first term. She is a gender equality expert and historian who has headed the Vilnius University Gender Studies Centre since 2000, is the Equal Opportunities Commission expert and a member of the Community of Democracies Gender Equality Working Group.
